How to play Texas Hold'em
Goal
Win everyone else’s chips. Make the best five-card poker hand, or bet so well that everyone else folds. The last player with chips wins.
The deal
- Everyone starts with 1,000 chips. The two players after the dealer button post the blinds: 10 and 20. The blinds double every 10 hands.
- Everyone is dealt 2 cards face down, for their eyes only.
Betting
- Before the flop: starting after the big blind, each player bets in turn.
- The flop: three cards are dealt face up in the middle, shared by everyone. Another round of betting.
- The turn: a fourth shared card, and another round.
- The river: a fifth shared card, and a last round.
Your choices when it’s your bet
- Fold: give up the hand, and any chips you’ve already put in.
- Call: match the biggest bet so far. When nobody has bet, check instead: stay in without betting.
- Raise: bet more, and everyone else has to match it, raise again or fold.
- All in: bet every chip you have. If you can’t cover a bet, calling puts you all in, and you can still win the part of the pot you matched.
The showdown
- Everyone still in shows their cards. Each makes the best five-card hand from their own two and the five shared cards, and the best hand takes the pot.
- From best to worst: royal flush, straight flush, four of a kind, full house, flush, straight, three of a kind, two pair, one pair, high card.
- If everyone else folds, the last player in takes the pot without showing.
Winning
Run out of chips and you’re out. The last player with chips wins.
Variations
Picked in the lobby before the game starts.
- Starting chips: 1,000. The host can also choose 500, 2,000 or 5,000.
- Blinds: 10/20. Bigger blinds against the same chips make a faster game. The host can also choose 5/10, 25/50 or 50/100.
- Blinds double: Every 10 hands. Rising blinds bring the game to an end. The host can also choose never, every 5 hands or every 20 hands.
