How to play Crazy 8s
Goal
Be the first to play every card in your hand. Cards left in your hand count against you, and the lowest total wins.
The deal
Everyone is dealt 7 cards with two players, or 5 with more. The rest is the stock, face down, and its top card is turned up to start the discard pile.
On your turn
- Play one card that matches the top of the discard pile by suit or by rank.
- Eights are wild: play one on anything, and name the suit the next player must follow.
- Or draw from the stock, even if you could play, and choose again. If you can’t play, keep drawing until you can.
- When the stock runs out, the discard pile is shuffled into a new one, up to three times a hand. After that, play if you can or pass.
Scoring
- The hand ends the moment someone plays their last card. Everyone else scores the cards left in their hand.
- An Eight counts 50, a King, Queen or Jack 10, an Ace 1, and any other card its number.
- The game ends when someone reaches 100 points, and the lowest total wins.
Variations
Picked in the lobby before the game starts.
- Play to: 100 points. The host can also choose 50, 200 or 500.
- Twos: draw two: Off. A Two is an ordinary card. On, a Two makes the next player draw two and miss their turn.
- Queens: skip: Off. A Queen is an ordinary card. On, a Queen makes the next player miss their turn.
- Aces: reverse: Off. An Ace is an ordinary card. On, an Ace turns play round the other way.
- Jokers: draw four: Off. There are no jokers. On, two jokers are added to each deck, wild like an Eight, and the next player draws four and misses their turn.
- Stack draw cards: Off. A player made to draw always draws. On, a player made to draw can answer a Two with a Two, or a joker with a joker, and pass the whole draw on.
- Reshuffle an empty stock: On. The discard pile becomes a new stock, up to three times a hand. Off, once the stock is gone, play if you can or pass, and the hand ends when nobody can.
- Deck: 52 cards. The usual deck. On the Deck tab, the host can add suits (Stars, Moons, Crowns, Towers), add number cards past 10 or shuffle more than one deck together.
